Callard brands Liz 'worst-dressed woman'

Coronation Street star Beverley Callard has described her character Liz McDonald as "the worst-dressed woman on the Street".

The barmaid is due to walk down the aisle with boyfriend Vernon (Ian Reddington) in the ITV1 soap, but her efforts to bring some sophistication to the wedding are not a success.

Callard said: "She's made an attempt at Posh Spice but she fails miserably - she's wearing a trouser suit with a wonder bra and a fedora hat. She is the worst-dressed woman on the Street and of course Vernon's outfit is worse - they need some help from Trinny and Susannah!"

Liz's commitment to Vernon has wavered in recent weeks, following her ex-husband Jim's return to Weatherfield after his release from prison.

Talking about her character's chances of going through with the wedding, the actress said: "Liz just can't resist a bad boy - she's got a self-destruct button. She knows Vernon's a bit of a wally, but he does truly love her and he'll always be loyal, but she wants a bit more excitement.

"She actually says to Deirdre that she knows Vernon will look after her better than anyone else but she wants a bit of danger and spontaneity."

She added: "Deirdre tries to talk some sense into her and reminds her that she's not 16 any more, but Liz tells her that she still feels it."

Callard recently revealed that her 1997 depression was caused by a hormonal imbalance following a hysterectomy.
