Coronation Street star Matt Crompton has thanked the soap's producers for saving his career.

Crompton considered giving up acting to train as a bricklayer just before he was offered the role of bookie Dan Mason on the ITV1 show.

"Corrie saved my career. It came along at just the right time. I'm still pinching myself even now," Matt told the Daily Star Sunday. "It's mad to think that just a few weeks before I got the part I was going to give it all up. But I was being realistic. There was no money coming in and I had to do something.

"I started looking into retraining and I'd picked up a bit of work on a building site, so I was thinking about doing something along those lines."

"Great roles in a show like Corrie don't come along too often," he added. "And Dan is a great one."

Matt has previously appeared as PC Sam Harker on The Bill.
