The actor will film his final scenes as bookie Dan Mason on the ITV1 soap later this year. He was told that he was being dropped from the programme in April as part of a huge cast clear-out.
"It won't worry me. I had a good laugh on the building site and the people I was working with were fantastic," Crompton told the Sunday Mirror. "Everyone's got to work and pay the rent. Between acting jobs I'd rather get out and do other things than sit on the dole."
Matthew, who lives in Cheshire with his fiancée Yvette Comper, had been considering training as a bricklayer when he was offered his soap role.
Speaking about being axed, he continued: "I was really disappointed, but it's not the end of the world. If Yvette had dumped me, that would have been the end of the world for me - not this.
"Now I just want to carry on and hope for the time being that I'll continue to get good storylines. And I hope they'll change their minds - I really do."
