Corrie's Vernon: '(Don't Fall Into) The Mason's Arms'

Published Monday, Sep 1 2008, 16:26 BST | By Kris Green | 29 comments
Here's a stroke of genius - and a Soap Scoop exclusive.

Over the last number of weeks, we've seen Coronation Street's Vernon Tomlin (Ian Reddington) attempting to pen a hit song. With his wife Liz (Bev Callard) as his muse, he kicked his musical mastermind into overdrive and came up with... well, a piece which is Corrie gold.

So, here's an audio snippet from the episode. Vernon's been begging Liz to listen to him sing for a good part of the day and when she finally gives in to his request, she's in for a shock as he sets about wooing her with his hit '(Don't Fall Into) The Mason's Arms'. Classic.

Hit play to hear Vernon in action.

These scenes are due to air tonight at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV1.

The words are confusing me...he isn't singing about Freemasons is he?

John, London, on September 25th, 2008
Brilliant stuff! There is a great remix of the song on YouTube! XMAS #1!
Ian, Liverpool, on September 23rd, 2008
I'm trying to remember, please help me if you can. How many broken hearted characters Have left Corrie in a van? A little bit of repetition Because I'm sure there's been a few. When someone's time is over, hiring a van's the thing to do!!
Ben, Lancs, on September 22nd, 2008
Absolutely brilliant when's it being released?
Sue, London, on September 22nd, 2008
Sweet little song but can't see it getting into the Top Ten. You should already know that the Christmas Number 1 will be the winner of the X Factor, as it has been over the last few years.
Ken Slamon, Salford, on September 22nd, 2008
Load of crap. Probably be number 1 at Christmas.
Paul, Brighton, on September 22nd, 2008
Little known fact; Ian Reddington was supposed to be the original lead singer of Heaven 17, and still friends with them...

Quality!!! Why are they loosing Vernon????? !!!! What a top bloke.
Graham, Rotherham, on September 10th, 2008
Brilliant, I've got the video of Vernon singing to Liz on my iPod. Christmas No 1 let's hope so!
John, North Yorkshire, on September 7th, 2008
The final proof that this character must go. NOW.
John, Norwich, on September 5th, 2008
Classic Coronation Street! It was worth struggling through all the banal storylines this past year just for this! (Well, this and Rosie's short skirts!)
Glenda Young, London, on September 4th, 2008
If anyone would like the lyrics to this wonderful song, I've blogged them on my Coronation street blog here: http://coronationstreetupdates.blogspot.com/2008/09/vernons-song-dont-you-fall-into-masons.html
Gary, Newcastle, on September 4th, 2008
Pure genius, this song is amazing and how good Vern's voice, hey how good is that! I feel a Corrie album coming out for Xmas...
Rachie, Glasgow, on September 3rd, 2008
I watched it tonight. It's actually a weestroke of genius and Vernon was surprisingly better that I thought.
Bernie, Witney, on September 3rd, 2008
