Watch 'Coronation Street's new title sequence

Published Wednesday, May 26 2010, 18:20 BST | By Kris Green | 94 comments
Coronation Street's new opening titles and theme tune make their debut on Monday evening as the ITV soap moves to high definition.

Speaking of the new look, executive producer Kieran Roberts said: “In our new titles Coronation Street remains the star but we see it as part of a busy, modern Manchester through our opening shots. The overall feel is livelier, more intimate and more colourful and they look stunning, especially in high definition."

He added: "We think the new titles have a classy, classic, timeless quality but at the same time feel vibrant, fresh and very contemporary. That combination is exactly what we strive for in the show itself.”

The Theme Tune sounds like it was recorded on a cheap midi keyboard. Bring back the full orchestra. Boo Hiss the new one is SHIT.

I also mute it, hehe. Fair do's the titles always change around every 10 years, no problem with that. But why they decided to change the original (watch some 60s episodes, folks) theme tune on the eve of the 50th anniversary is beyond me. It just feels like a mickey take & an insult to the show's history. Eric Spear must be turning in his grave!

There may have been a few slight variations over the years to the them music but these were very slight, this new recording is nothing like the any of the other versions, the other versions were a proper orchestra this version is just crap.

I've found that I actually mute the sound and look away while the titles play. It means that you do miss the first few seconds of dialogue when coronation street properly starts but its a price worth paying I reckon. The theme sounds like it's being played by the house band of a chat show using keyboards instead of real brass instruments, and I just don't know where I'm supposed to look regarding the graphics as the depth of field is about 1/4 inch - the bricks?, the first R in rovers?, or the pathetic CGI pigeons. Tend to watch on STV player these days as you can skip past the titles. It'd be nice if they could just edit them off altogether and save us the bother.

People get a grip! Its only opening titles!
Rhoderick, on July 12th, 2010
I rarely watch TV so I only heard the new theme by accident. Terrible, Soulless: The theme from 'The Bill' was also re-arranged some years ago and that lost all its character. If it is not broken, do not fix it.

The new titles and theme tune are dreary and sounds slightly out of tune...please bring back the good old theme we all seem to love. No need to change for changes sake.

As soon as I heard the new theme tune arrangement I switched off. I and millions of others have grown up with the Corrie tune and to mess about with it demonstrates a contempt for the fans.

I really think it's vile! The music is slow, old fashioned and boring. The titles are blurred, uninteresting and together with the awful music make me want to switch off! I'm all for progress but this is RUBBISH and whoever gave it the thumbs up should GET THE SACK!! Bring back the Corrie theme and titles we know and love and SIGN THE PETITION!!

So what self motivated degree type decided this one. Why oh why can't things just be left as original, this compulsion to change this day and age always seems to be for the worst.

Hate the new tune. Goes back to the 1950's. Totally spoils the ambiance of good story lines. Bring back the old one, fast. p.s. Gail is guilty....of bad acting...!
Jason, on June 9th, 2010
I think the "new" theme tune is great, if you check out some of the opening sequences on youtube from years ago you will see that it is much closer to the original than the old version. I love it.
George Windsor, on June 9th, 2010
Please bring back the original theme tune score, this new version is horrible, too 'clean' sounding. Why change it now after 50 years? Bring it back please!
Gary Spring, on June 7th, 2010
The new music is absolutely awful. It's too jaunty, lacks drama and is almost a pastiche of the original theme which had been going since 1960. The fade-out during the break is particularly bad.
Jane Taylor, on June 6th, 2010
It's very good. It sounds almost the same as before, but only better.
Ruby x, on June 5th, 2010
I love corrie! its sooo good please bring back the old tune it soooo much better! :) x
Bruno, on June 5th, 2010
I can live with the new visuals, especially with Corrie going HD, but PLEASE reinstate the version of the theme tune that we're all so familiar with. The tone of the old version, especially the opening trumpet and clarinet phrases, were performances that had 'soul'. This new recording seems far too clinical with no passion whatsoever. In this case newer is definitely not better.
Leanne, on June 4th, 2010
Really upset to hear the new theme tune. PLEASE PLEASE bring back the old familiar tune that we all love.
Beryl, on June 3rd, 2010
