Two of the most-discussed awards over the next few weeks will no doubt be the 'Best Actor' and 'Best Actress' categories. It's been an eventful year for all the actors and actresses who have landed a nomination - so with that in mind, we've taken a quick look back at some of the drama the top four in each have faced in their respective roles.
Read on to find out more about the 'Best Actor' nominees:

Peter Barlow has had a hell of a year. The recovering alcoholic struggled to keep his family together when grandfather George rocked up determined to have Simon in his life. Nick Tilsley also threatened to put a spanner in the works when he set his sights on Leanne. A lengthy affair plot concluded as the tram crash left Peter's life in jeopardy. Thankfully the bookie survived and began a long and difficult period of recovery. Valentine's Day drama ensued as Peter discovered his wife's secret and sought revenge on his love rival in the wreckage of The Joinery in dramatic scenes. And after all that, he's still sober!

It almost feels like we never said goodbye to Alfie Moon on Christmas Day in 2005. The loveable rogue waltzed back into Albert Square in October and straight into drama as he was reunited with his wife Kat. It wasn't long before the duo were back at The Queen Vic and - despite a dodgy upstairs makeover - they felt right at home. Despite knowing that Kat wasn't carrying his baby, heartbreak followed as Alfie and Kat were pulled apart following what was believed to be the death of Tommy. Happier times appear to be on the horizon for the Moons as they readjust to life with their son and the arrival of some extended family members!

Aaron Livesy has cemented himself as one of Emmerdale's most popular characters. There has been no shortage of tears as the mechanic came to terms with his sexuality, revealed all in court and embarked on his first relationship with Jackson Walsh. Although before Aaron could utter the word "boyfriend", tragedy struck and a devastating accident left Jackson paralysed. Tough times await the couple, as Danny Miller has teased that 2011 will be "an even bigger year" for the mechanic. How many more tissues can we go through?

The bad, mad and dangerous Brendan Brady has been at the forefront of Hollyoaks' biggest storylines since he arrived on screens last August. Fans have seen Brendan embark on a complex and abusive relationship with show regular Ste Hay, before growing more attached to the barman than he ever thought possible. Brendan got away with murder when he killed gangster Danny Houston to protect Ste at Christmas, but things recently went wrong for him when half-sister Cheryl discovered many of his sinister secrets at last. Emmett recently tweeted that he has some more "dark ass storylines" ahead, so we can only guess at what 'Double B' will get up to next…
