The new, extended run of BBC police drama HolbyBlue has already seen the death of Robert Clifton (Kieran O'Brien), while Oliver Milburn and James Thornton have joined the ranks as new coppers DCI Scott Vaughan and PC Jake Loughton. Digital Spy caught up with former Footballers' Wives actor Zoe Lucker to chat about what's in store for her character Kate Keenan, whether Kate and John's relationship will ever be back to how it was and everyone's favourite WAG, Tanya Turner.

You must be really pleased that the show was picked up for an extended second season!
"Yeah, I'm really pleased. I'm here for three years if it goes for that long, which I'm sure it will, touch wood. It's one of those things – you hope that things are going to be well received and it's always great news when you get another run. With the initial series being eight episodes, by the time the series had finished, you're still working at and developing the character. It's a real pleasure to go back and work with all the people who you haven't seen for six months, though."

Will Kate and John's relationship ever return to the way it was?
"John and Kate have been really working on it, but as much as they love each other, they still have their problems. I think it's more to the fact that John's so committed to his work. We see a lot more of John over the course of series two and we see a lot more of his past. They try to make a go of it again – for themselves, obviously, because they love each other, and also for the kids. But all the old problems just don't ever go away."

Doesn't Kate begin delving into John's past?
"Throughout this series, you start to learn a lot more about John. Anything that Kate ever does in her relationship is with no malice at all. It's all to do with trying to make things better, trying to understand John. The frustration comes with the fact that he's not a great communicator and he shuts everything out. Kate, however, is a very open and honest person. For her, if anything's going wrong, she has to vocalise it. Inevitably, both Kate and John irritate each other and it gets to a point where everything just explodes and becomes bigger than it ever needed to be."

How does Kate interact with Oliver Milburn's character, DCI Scott Vaughan?
"Kate steamed into Scott at the commissioners' event early on in the series, not knowing that their paths were ever going to cross again and Kate originally took it as hugely complimentary that someone was drawn to her. But then he joins the station and there's some recognition between the pair which no-one else has – it's only those two who know about it. They develop a nice friendship throughout the series and they have a lot of banter. Kate's so much into John, though. Always has been, always will be."

It's been two years since Footballers' Wives ended, but do people still come up to you and talk to you about Tanya Turner?
"Yeah, they do. I miss that character. It was a fantastic five years. Sometimes when I'm watching TV and clips come on and flash up when I'm not expecting it, it makes me feel really weird. It feels like it was a totally different world."

What about the future - would you consider US TV roles?
"It's not something that I've been really urgently trying to do. I'm a massive believer that things happen at the right time without forcing them. I love American TV – I'm a huge fan of American comedy and a lot of the big US TV shows - but it's about when it's right. Looking back at my life two years ago, though, it feels like it's worlds apart compared to how it is now, so who knows?"
