The BBC are said to be backing producer Bryan Kirkwood, who wants the show to feature more drugs and violence.
A source told the Daily Star Sunday: "Bryan was at Hollyoaks during the glory days. The BBC chiefs have every faith in him and have given him total control over what direction he takes E20.
"He is determined to push the boundaries, just like he did when he was on Hollyoaks. There will be a lot of heavy drug storylines involving dealers.
"It’s going to be dark and everyone working on the show is expecting quite a few raised eyebrows."
The show was handed a second run earlier this year.
