RTE has won the right to retain its sets for Fair City for three years, despite objections from Dublin City Council.

According to The Herald, the city's authority had originally limited the broadcaster's permission for the structures to one year, but RTE appealed and review board An Bord Pleanala ruled in its favour.

However, the ruling upheld Dublin City Council's right to limit the length of time the sets could remain and said that the three-year window would allow production to be shifted while "providing for continuity in filming of the drama series".

The broadcaster has faced staunch objections from a number of people, including the German ambassador in the city. Busso von Alvensleben wrote to the council complaining of explosions and all-night filming, disturbing the European nation's embassy in the Dublin 4 area.

The local authority itself had voiced "concerns regarding the visual impact... on residential properties to the rear of the application site".

Recently, Fair City star Sarah McDowell suggested that scenes depicting the domestic abuse of her character Suzanne Doyle "went too far".
