Issue #7: The Perfect Blend

By and Neil Wilkes
Anniversaries are always a good excuse to serve up a man-size portion of whatever and generally over indulge.

So it’s with relish that I salute the double decade anniversary of our friends from Down Under, Neighbours.

Whenever the programme title is uttered, it’s hard not to think immediately of Kylie and Jason, but this Antipodean soap has moved on apace since those days and has provided us with much enjoyment. And I have no doubt it will continue to do so for a very long time.

It is now as much a part of Australia as kangaroos, koala bears, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the funnel-web spider.

So I take this opportunity to raise my glass to Ramsay Street and say “Thanks for the past 20 years – and long may you reign.???

Izzy really going out with her?

After the truth finally comes out about Izzy's exploits, she is left with nowhere to turn - even Max is appalled. A similarly ostracised Paul eventually convinces her to move in with him on Ramsay Street, evicting Lou in the process. The pair soon become the neighbours from hell...

Crushes realised

Connor is faced with a dilemma after his bikini shop employee Serena develops an intense crush on him. Resisting temptation despite a number of excruciating predicaments, Connor finally gives in. But is their age gap relationship doomed from the start?

A similar storyline between Karl and Janae develops, but it's not a love interest she's really after.

Tying the knot

Stu and Sindi's wedding, planned for the end of the month, may not be plain sailing. Toadie becomes increasingly suspicious that Sindi may not be all she's cracked up to be and confronts her at the ceremony itself. Punches are thrown but will vows be forged? Expect this storyline to play out over the weeks ahead leading up to Sindi's exit at the end of the year.

New arrivals

As well as the return of several old faces, including Sky's dad Joe Mangel, a host of new characters will move into Ramsay Street in the months ahead.

Stuart's brother Ned, played by Australian Idol finalist Dan O'Connor, turns up in December to check up on his sibling's troubled relationship. But what secret is he hiding?

The Kinski family - dad Alex, daughter Rachel and son Zeke - soon arrive to the street and waste no time in getting acquainted with their new neighbours. Expect Susan to fall for Alex, despite fate's intervention.

Meanwhile, Paul and Connor each receive a blast from the past.

EXCLUSIVE: The plane crash

The rumours are true.

Three Ramsay Street residents will perish in a storyline to play out on Aussie screens later this month. A bomber strikes while a group are on a flight to Tasmania to celebrate Lassiter's 20th anniversary, sending the plane careering down into the ocean. Among those on the doomed flight are Paul, Izzy, Connor, Serena, Sky, Dylan, Susan, Alex, David and Lil. But who will die? We'll not spoil the surprise... but suffice to say that it leaves one of the Street's grief-stricken older residents on a hunt for revenge.

Two of the survivors will use the opportunity to fake their own deaths after landing themselves in trouble with the law. One of the duo eventually returns - arriving back at their own funeral - but the other decides to leave Erinsborough behind forever.

Meanwhile, after his target survives the crash, the bomber sends a chilling message to make it clear he's not done yet. Somebody had better watch their back...

Competition

We had an overwhelming response to our last competiton and, thanks to our friends at Network DVD, we had five sets of Coronation Street 1972 and Coronation Street 1973 DVDs to give away.

The question I set was: Which famous character was played by Jack Howarth? The answer, of course, was the legendary Albert Tatlock. What a lovely character he was!

The five winners were: Joanna Pinkney from Solihull, Lorna Browett of Surrey, Ricky Davison in London, Nick Hamilton-King from Cornwall and Linda Flood of Scotland. Congratulations to you all.

Now, to celebrate this special one-off Aussie Issue, I’m giving away a Neighbours board game along with a ‘Neighbours: Defining Moments’ DVD thanks to our special friends at Fremantle.

To win, simply answer to the following question: Who plays 20th anniversary returnee Joe Mangel?

UPDATE: This competition has now closed.

To enter, simply click Kris Green's name at the top of the page, fill in the form and Bob’s your uncle!
