Special Report: HD DTT in France
France is currently operating a limited trial of HD DTT services in Paris, Lyon and Marseille. Unlike the limited trial currently taking place in London, the test transmissions in France are open to anyone who pays around €250 for a Netgem Netbox 7600 HD set top box.
The box itself looks like other Netgem products but in addition to the usual array of ports it has an HDMI connector. During initial setup, the SCART connection is used but once configured and switched on the HDMI settings offer a lot of options. SD and HD resolutions are both offered, with the HD resolutions being offered in both 50 and 60 Hz varieties (making the box usable with older TVs that only support 60Hz).
The picture quality as one would expect.
If you connect the box to a router via the Ethernet port - originally designed for use with an IPTV service - it connects to the Internet and this appears to be how to obtain firmware updates.
The box does not work with the UK DTT trial. While it sees the technical data from Crystal Palace correctly, it can't see the LCN information and does not identify the broadcasts as HDTV services.
