The method of broadcasting the network information table, which tells equipment which services are carried Freeview, is being altered region-by-region to accommodate more channels and stations. Some early receivers are unable read the new-format NIT.
The change was first carried out in the West Midlands on June 2 and, though no timetable has yet been given, it is expected to continue UK wide.
"Unfortunately some of the early boxes can no longer cope with the amount of transmitted information and so the affected homes will need to replace their equipment to continue receiving the Freeview service," Freeview said in a statement.
Freeview said the Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, Triax DVB 2000T and Portland DP100 set top boxes would be affected along with the Daewoo SV900 and Bush IDVCR01 DVRs.
