Sky to offer pay TV service online

Sky will launch a subscription-based pay television service on the internet using its Sky Player platform, it was confirmed today.
Full details on the channel lineup, pricing and launch date have yet to be unveiled but Sky said the service will offer key Sky channels plus some channels from other broadcasters. An online version of Sky's electronic programme guide will combine listings for linear and on demand programmes available on the Sky Player.
"We want to make it easy for customers to enjoy great TV on their terms," said Sky's chief operating officer, Mike Darcey. "Sky Player already gives more flexibility to Sky TV customers and soon we will offer some of the most popular pay TV channels through a standalone subscription to a secure online platform. While the laptop won’t replace the TV experience for most people, we’re creating more choices to allow customers to choose the option that suits their lifestyle."
A number of subscription packages - offered without the need to take Sky's satellite TV service - will be offered. Sky satellite TV customers will still be able to access on demand content through Sky Player in line with their main TV subscription.
