Telewest officially launched its 256kbps-downstream broadband access tier on Friday after a month of pre-registration.
The new entry-level tier is priced at £17.99 per month, and is aimed at users who want always-on access for email and web browsing without tying up the phone line, but who don't need higher speeds for multimedia applications. Blueyonder offers 512kbps, 1Mbps and 2Mbps services in addition to the new tier.
The service has a quasi-cap at 750MB of traffic per day, codified in section ten of Telewest's Acceptable Use Policy:
"...This service is not designed for heavy usage, such as streaming videos or frequent large file downloads or uploads. As a result, it is expected that Users will not generate more than 750MB (Mega Bytes) of traffic per day (the "Usage Guideline"). This is equivalent to, for example, approximately 15,000 web pages.
"Telewest wishes to ensure and maintain Users' enjoyment of the 256k Service. Telewest therefore may contact (eg by email) any User who frequently exceeds the Usage Guideline."
Telewest's director of internet services, Chad Raube, said: "The launch of our 256Kb blueyonder service is great news for people who have so far been put off by the higher prices of broadband net access. Now, for practically peanuts, people all over the country can afford to speed up their surfing with our high-speed package, at the best price we've ever offered."
