Over 200,000 Freesat devices have been sold since the service launched last May, it was announced today.
The BBC-ITV joint venture markets the availability of free-to-air services on digital satellite and has its own EPG and interactive specification. In September 2008, it reported sales of 100,000 devices - a figure that more than doubled by the end of the year.
"We saw consumers increasingly drawn to Freesat at the end of last 2008 and into this year," said Freesat managing director Emma Scott. "The quality and choice of channels and services available and the added benefits offered by Freesat+ have really struck a chord."
Freesat said that HD had become a key selling point, with 61% of a "customer panel" choosing the availability of high definition content as their "primary reason" for purchasing.
"Freesat is able to offer incredible HD with no subscription," said Scott. "We’re thrilled that both the BBC and ITV are investing more in HD programming in 2009."
