The BBC has confirmed months of rumours by announcing that it is planning to launch a subscription-based sports channel in an attempt to win back audiences from the likes of BSkyB.
The sports channel will be run in partnership with another broadcaster and will not be funded by licence payers' money, according to BBC Online.
Peter Salmon, BBC Director of Sport, said: "There will be an announcement by Easter and we aim to have something that viewers can see by autumn next year. We've been talking about this for years and suddenly it's on the horizon, and it's serious, and there's a will to do it from the top of the BBC.
"We wouldn't invest any money. The money would come from our commercial partners. What we'd invest is our talent and our archive and some of our existing rights."
Possible partners are said to include BSkyB, ntl, ONdigital and Channel 4.
Mr Salmon told The Observer: "We've narrowed the field and are still in talks with several different broadcasters. There are some really good suitors, but pretty soon we're going to have to make up our mind who we're going to walk up the altar with."
