Set-top-box manufacturer Pace has announced plans to make high definition-capable STBs available to satellite and cable operators in Europe.
"HD is happening now in Europe and broadcasters cannot afford to ignore it," said Neil Gaydon, Pace’s Worldwide Sales & Marketing Director. "The key components for a successful European HD service have come together. Euro1080’s launch means real compelling HD content and services are now available. The price of high-end large screen displays is continuing to fall. And as demonstrated today, Pace’s cutting-edge HD set-top box technology will be ready before the end of the year, enabling European cable or satellite operators to deliver these compelling, revenue-rich HD direct to their customers."
Euro1080 officially launch on January 1, 2004. Its HD1 premium channel is available on Astra satellite (Astra 1H, 19.2° East, 12.168GHz V) and on some cable systems in Europe. It transmits using the 1080i50 standard, and it is presently unclear as to whether Euro1080 will convert to transmissions to 720p50, the preferred format of the European Broadcasting Union. Pace's DS840 HD digital satellite box will launch to retail in December 2004. It offers an embedded Irdeto conditional access system to allow subscription to Euro1080 services, a DVB common interface slot, an HDMI connector, and SP-DIF out.
