Virgin Media to rollout new IPTV platform

The cable operator intends to roll out Cisco's Digital Video Headend technology - including IP core and edge routing and switching - over its national fibre optic network to enable the expansion of standard and high definition TV services.
The new system will ensure high-speed distribution between Virgin Media's central and regional headends, as well as speed up the introduction of new SD and HD channels in the future.
Upon completion, the platform will allow Virgin Media to provide advanced services to 12.6 million homes around the UK, as well as reduce the company's operational costs.
The deal also includes Cisco providing full installation, systems integration and support from the Cisco Advanced Video Services Group.
"Upgrading our digital TV platform means we can continue bringing innovative new services to our customers," said Virgin Media director of technical architecture Daniel Hennessy.
"With greater resilience and added capacity, we can guarantee an outstanding viewer experience as we add further HD content to our TV platform.
"Cisco has the right experience and expertise to deliver a complete solution and help support the rollout of a next generation of entertainment services."
Cisco UK & Ireland vice president Phil Smith added: "Cisco values the relationship with Virgin Media, which has developed and deepened over the years.
"Since Cisco introduced the concept of medianets - intelligent networks that are optimised to deliver rich-media content - we have seen service providers like Virgin Media take the lead in transforming their networks to really differentiate the consumer experience.
"With the new IP-based TV transmission platform, Virgin Media customers can look forward to services that will change the way they are entertained."
The cable operator is also currently preparing for the launch of Living HD after a placeholder for the channel appeared on the EPG last month.
