French channels unveil DTT plans

The channels launching as part of France's new free-to-air DTT service have revealed their programming plans, C21 reports today.
Festival, which targets 25-49 year olds, will be renamed 'France 4' to fill the gap amongst existing offerings France 2, France 3 and France 5. The channel will run on a budget of €18m (£12.5m), with at least €12m (£8.4m) of that going towards programming.
France 4’s lineup will include movies, drama, performing arts and sports. The channel also intends to run theatre plays and music in primetime.
All-new channel Direct 8, meanwhile, will air live talk shows for the most part. President Philippe Labro confirmed that movies would also be on the cards, "but not the mainstream ones which are on the terrestrial channels and which we can’t afford anyway."
Another new station is NT1 from the AB Group, which intends to target "all audiences" with a lineup including drama and an evening news show.
The French DTT service is due to go live in March, with a pay TV element following this September.
