An array of broadcasters have submitted bids for the new channel opening on Freeview.

ITV and Channel 4 are considered to be the strongest contenders for the 18-hour slot, with rumoured bids of between £5m and £7m.

Crown Castle, the transmission company which has created the new space, is now "considering" all of the offers. Money won't be the only factor at play: as one of the partners in Freeview, the company is keen that a variety of different channels are available through the service.

According to Broadcast, other bidders include Five, Disney, Universal, Turner, Top-Up TV and Sit-Up. Contrary to previous reports, Sky has not made a play for the channel.

The winner will be decided by the end of this month before the station goes live on April 1.
