Sky HD programmes on analogue output
Published Friday, Jun 10 2005, 17:18 BST | By James Welsh
All HD programmes on Sky-operated channels will be available on the analogue component outputs of the first-generation HD set-top-boxes, the broadcaster has confirmed to Digital Spy.
"The first generation of Sky’s High Definition STB will, as well as the HDMI output, have analogue component outputs which will work in full HD resolution," said Sky's new head of HD marketing at a press event organised by Sony and attended by Digital Spy's Alan Jay. "All Sky’s programming will be available in HD over the analogue port of this receiver."
During a subsequent presentation, it was revealed that the first-generation of HD set-top-boxes for Sky will be capable of limiting the resolution on the analogue component outputs and that Sky would not stop third party channels from using such capabilities as part of an "open platform" ethos. In addition, some channels may choose to make content available only over the HDMI interface. However, Sky emphasised that they have no plans to use either function on any of its owned-and-operated pay-TV channels.
No further details were made available at the event as to when Sky's HD service will launch.
