ESPN has launched a high definition simulcast of ESPN America on Sky, bringing its portfolio of UK channels to five in total.

Available now at position 431 on Sky's electronic programming guide, ESPN America HD will offer a range of North American sports in HD, including baseball, ice hockey and American football.

The channel, which joins ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Classic and the existing ESPN America channel, will be made available to existing ESPN subscribers who also have a Sky HD subscription at no extra cost.

At launch, ESPN said that 85% of content on ESPN America HD will be native HD to give viewers "first class image quality and clarity".

"ESPN has been a pioneer in high definition television around the world," said ESPN's senior vice president & EMEA managing director Lynne Frank, who plans to leave her post in September.

"Anybody who has experienced HD knows how much it adds to the viewing experience, and this launch is part of our dedication to bringing the very best in sports television to a wider audience."

During the FIFA World Cup, ESPN is broadcasting a nightly show from South Africa, with Ray Stubbs tracking Fabio Capello's England team as they progress through the tournament.
