Channel 4, ITV expected to join Freeview consortium

ITV and Channel 4 are preparing to announce that they have joined the consortium behind Freeview, the Sunday Telegraph said at the weekend.

The consortium, which handles promotion of the service, currently comprises the BBC, BSkyB and transmission company Crown Castle. The two new broadcasters will join as equal shareholders.

Stakeholders each contribute around £1 million a year to fund Freeview's operations. Although the organisation is not-for-profit, membership gives particpants valuable influence over the development of the service.

A source told the newspaper: "[ITV and Channel 4] have clearly decided that it's better to be inside the consortium and have a better idea of, and also shape, what's going in within it."
