Milne, previously the consulting managing editor for news agency Deadline News, joined STV in February as regional editor of STV Local in Edinburgh. He will now oversee all editorial content for STV Local websites serving six local authority areas across Scotland - North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, Moray and Edinburgh.
His editorial team supplies the 22 STV Local branded community websites with a range of information, including news, event listings and reviews, as well as weather and traffic updates.
Alongside working at Deadline News, Milne was also previously associate news editor at the Daily Record and assistant editor at the Scottish Daily Mirror.
"It's a privilege to be given the chance to play such a key role in helping shape what is one of Europe's most exciting digital media projects and to build on the great work of the talented team and communities involved so far," he said.
"It is a fantastic opportunity for me personally and for all those lucky enough to work on STV Local at such an exciting time in its evolution, and I look forward to both the challenges and opportunities to come on the journey ahead."
David Milne, the executive editor of STV Local, added: "I'm delighted that Shaun has been appointed editor and I am confident he will do a fantastic job in his new role.
"Shaun has made a tremendous contribution as Regional Editor for Edinburgh and his passion, experience and ideas will now be focused on growing our audience by delivering even better content and services to the communities we serve."
In February, STV reported a resurgent financial performance in 2010, with the Scottish broadcaster's television revenue up 16% to £104m on the back of an ad market recovery.
