Telewest has confirmed that it will be carrying high-definition coverage of the World Cup from the BBC and ITV.
The cable operator has signed deals with both broadcasters to carry every match in HDTV for customers equipped with TVDrive, which combines a PVR with high-definition output capabilities. Telewest will be the only pay TV service to carry high definition simulcasts of ITV's World Cup coverage.
"The beautiful game is about to get a serious makeover. Telewest customers with TVDrive will be able to watch every World Cup game in stunning high definition and, for those who aren't gripped by England's exploits, we're also lining up a feast of alternative HD entertainment," said Philip Snalune, NTL Telewest's managing director of consumer products. "Since we launched Britain's first HDTV service, thousands of football fans have invested in HD-ready screens in anticipation of the World Cup and we're flying in additional TVDrives to satisfy demand."
Other series confirmed to be part of the BBC's HD trial include Planet Earth, Bleak House, Robin Hood, The Proms and Later with Jools Holland; ITV is planning to broadcast Jean-Michel Cousteau's Ocean Adventures, classic films and Poirot specials.
