President and chief executive Shigetaka Komori announced at a Tokyo Press conference that the device will be available in the spring, but did not reveal its technical specifications.
"The clear objective is the development of lenses, sensor and processor technology to achieve the highest image quality," the executive said.
Fuji was rumoured to be rolling out a range of new cameras this autumn. Reports speculated that its next models will feature a Micro Four Thirds sensor and new Fujinon lenses to bring them in line with the Olympus PEN and Panasonic G series.
Komori went on to say that the camera will have "low noise and will surpass the 35mm full-size sensor", but no further details were divulged, 43 Rumors reports.
Fujifilm is expected to release its mirrorless system camera in spring 2012.
