Research in Motion (RIM) has announced that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be given a price drop for the holiday season.

The tablet device will retail at $199 (£127) at participating retailers for a limited time only, according to the manufacturer.

Best Buy, Wireless Giant, Staples, OfficeMax, Office Depot, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart are listed on the PlayBook website as stores involved in the promotion. RIM is yet to reveal a specific time frame for the offer, with rumours suggesting that it is a Black Friday deal.

The BlackBerry PlayBook launched at $499 (£318), but has since been given a price drop following lower sales than predicted. It is currently available for as low as $299 (£190).

Low PlayBook sales are one of several issues RIM has encountered over the last year. Last month, a global service outage hit BlackBerry users, depriving them of email, internet and messenger services for several days.

The BlackBerry PlayBook's OS 2.0 software update will be issued in February 2012.
