The platform holder's year-end Rewind charts revealed that Pocket Gems' freemium game made more money in 2011 than any other App Store product.
Four free-to-play games made more revenue than this year's bestselling premium title Angry Birds, which was ranked in sixth. Poker by Zynga claimed second, Smurfs' Village fourth, and Tap Pet Hotel fifth.
TomTom's UK & Ireland and Western Europe sat nav apps claimed third and seventh, respectively. iMobsters, Zombie Farm and World War accounted for the remainder of the top ten.
Half of the top 20 bestselling apps on Apple's UK storefront were freemium titles. The figure is slightly higher on the US chart, which was also topped by Tap Zoo.
Apple named photo sharing software Instagram as its app of the year in both the UK and the US. Game of the year went to Tiny Wings in the UK, and Tiny Tower in the US.
