The client enables the social network's subscribers to communicate with their friends without the use of a browser.
Facebook has released the application for the public to try out, but warned that it could be hit by "outages" and "periods of instability" while it remains in the testing phase.
"We're testing out a first version of the app with a small group of people. During this trial period, we plan on rolling out changes to the app and expect outages and periods of instability as we make improvements," read a statement on the website.
Facebook is currently the internet's leading social networking site by a significant margin, though Messenger marks its first venture outside of web and app territory. The application faces competition from Microsoft's established Live Messenger service.
Facebook Messenger for Windows will receive automatic updates as the service is improved.
