All Things D reports "sources close to the situation" as saying that the US technology giant intends to make an important "media-related" announcement at the end of January.
The announcement, which comes in the same month as the CES technology show in Las Vegas, is not likely to be a big reveal of the third iteration of the iPad tablet computer.
It is also not expected to involve the launch of Apple's rumoured new connected TV sets, although both these products are widely speculated to arrive this year.
Instead, it is likely to involve a new advertising or publishing venture, particularly as Apple senior vice president of internet software Eddy Cue is said to be involved.
Cue oversees large parts of Apple's media business, including the iTunes Store, App Store and iBooks, along with the iAd and iCloud platforms launched last year.
The last New York media event attended by Cue last year involved the launch of The Daily, Rupert Murdoch's iPad-only magazine.
Apple has also recently opened a new retail outlet in Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal, and has been busy refurbishing its glass cube on Fifth Avenue in the city.
The firm declined to comment on the report.
