Apple's iPhone 4S came in second place behind the Android device, according to sales and search data collected by uSwitch.
Android handsets dominated the chart, accounting for eight of the top ten places. Apple claimed two spots, with its iPhone 4 coming in fifth.
Budget phones, the HTC Wildfire S and the Samsung Galaxy Ace, took fourth and fifth respectively. uSwitch's Ernest Doku attributed this trend to Christmas season bargain hunters.
"With Christmas 2011 epitomised by the bargain-hunter, price has been as important as hardware, and phones offered free on low-cost tariffs are the ones that have been flying off the shelves throughout December," he said.
The Nokia Lumia 800 and HTC Sensation XE were notable absentees from the top ten.
