Research by analytics firm Distimo suggests that the mobile storefront has doubled in size since April last year.
Apple's App Store exceeded the 400,000 mark in June, but its Google counterpart is quickly gaining ground with more than 100,000 publishers creating software for it.
Grand Theft Auto III is currently the most popular app on the Android Market in the premium category, while Facebook for Android topped the free chart. However, World of Goo is the highest-grossing.
Free applications account for 68% of the software available on the Android Market. More than 10 billion apps have been downloaded via the storefront to date.
Google's Android became the world's most popular smartphone platform earlier this year when it overtook Nokia's Symbian.
