Sky has today launched a new Sky Sports News application for iPad that has been specifically designed to stream live and on-demand video content on Apple's tablet.

The new app, which follows the launch of a free Sky Sports News app for iPhone and iPad in August 2010, will provide subscribers to the Sky Sports News channel with video, rich interactive graphics and breaking news on their iPad.

Staffed by a dedicated team within Sky Sports News, the iPad app is intended as a way to help sports fans keep track of the latest stories from the Sky Sports News TV channel while on the go, as well as access various information and the Sky Sports News radio service.

Each news story on the app features on-demand video, while there are dedicated homepages for all the major sports, including football, rugby and cricket. Users can also access the latest fixtures, standings and results.

"The Sky Sports News App is the latest exciting development in the evolution of Sky Sports News, which is now bigger and better than ever before," said Andy Cairns, executive editor of Sky Sports News.

"We aim to be the ultimate sports news service for our customers, and thanks to this new app we can provide them with the latest sports news and in-depth coverage, wherever they happen to be."

Sky's director mobile David Gibbs added: "As the UK's leading mobile sports brand, we already offer our customers a number of innovative apps which help them get the most out of their Sky subscription, and Sky Sports News for iPad further enhances this selection."

The Sky Sports News App is available for free to Sky Sports News subscribers from the App Store on iPad. It is also being offered to non-Sky customers on a standalone basis for £4.99 per month through the In-App Purchase system.

Sky made the Sky Sports News channel exclusive to pay-TV in August 2010, after removing the the channel from Freeview and launching a high definition simulcast.
