Sony releases new bass-heavy B170 Walkman

Sony has today announced the colourful new Walkman B170 Series, featuring a bass boost button for "rich, pumping low-end sound".

The Japanese electronics giant hopes that the MP3 player will compete with the Apple's market-leading iPod by its slim form factor, but considerable power.

Pressing a Bass Boost on the device means the user will be "blown away" by the low-end audio, said Sony, while a colour-matched LED pulses in time with the music.

The slimline B series weighs in at just 28g and has dimensions of 88.8 x 22.5 x 15.0mm. It comes with a clip for attaching to a belt or clothing.

Sony said that just three minutes of charging will give enough battery power for 90 minutes of listening, while the B series will run non-stop for 18 hours on a full charge.

Anyone buying the top-end 4GB model will get space for storing around 400 songs on the device, which can be played back at 128kbps.

The product has been designed as a combined USB stick for connecting to a PC or laptop without the need for additional cable, or linking to a compatible HiFi or stereo.

Users can also access ZAPPIN, which scans their music collection and offers a short preview of each track without menus or playlists. Any favoured tracks can be played in full via the 'Zap' button.

Others features include an on-board equalizer and a voice recorder for taking notes.

Available in red, black and blue, the Sony Walkman B170 will be released in the UK next month in 2GB and 4GB sizes. Pricing is yet to be announced.
