The social networking firm's VP of Partnerships Dan Rose announced the figure at the Midem conference in Cannes, which runs until January 31.
Rose did not confirm what percentage of those 5 billion shares were a result of the company's partnership with Spotify.
Facebook users were reported to have shared 1.5 million songs via the streaming service as of November, but Mark Zuckerberg's firm also has agreements in place with other music providers.
Facebook announced plans to become a fully-fledged entertainment hub at f8. An agreement with Netflix was established to bring movie services to subscribers, and Zeebox was brought in to provide TV content.
The social networking giant announced last week that all of its users will be given a Timeline profile in the coming weeks. The service, which chronologically lists all users' activity on their Facebook profile, was offered on a voluntary basis in December.
Facebook is the world's largest social networking site with more than 800 million active users.
