The manufacturer launched the initiative to help boost the tablet's app share ahead of the launch of its new BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 operating system.
RIM has produced a set of tools to help Android programmers optimise their software for the slate. Apps must make it through RIM's approval process before their maker is handed their complimentary PlayBook.
Thorsten Heins joined RIM as its new president and CEO last month, replacing Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie. The firm endured a tough year in 2011 with sales of its PlayBook falling below par and October's global service outage.
The PlayBook 2.0 operating system's Android compatibility has sparked rumours that RIM's upcoming smartphones, such as the recently leaked BlackBerry London, will also run Android apps.
RIM previously laid out plans to revitalise its PlayBook line with two new tablets in 2012.
