Ubuntu for Android unveiled by Canonical

Ubuntu for Android has been announced by Canonical.
The service brings the firm's free operating system to handsets running the Google platform via a phone dock.
Users can run the OS simultaneously on both devices, facilitating the sharing of contacts, messages, and other services.
"The phone experience is pure Android - it's a normal Android phone. When the device is connected to a computer screen, however, it launches a full Ubuntu desktop on the computer display," said Canonical in a statement.
"It's exactly the same desktop used by millions of enterprise and home users on their Ubuntu PCs, and includes hundreds of certified applications, from office productivity to photography, video and music."
Android apps such as contacts, telephony and messaging will be accessible from the Ubuntu interface. Smartphone data can be accessed by the user at any time regardless of whether the device is docked.
Hardware requirements include HDMI and USB support, which are likely to be standard features of new high-end handsets scheduled for release in 2012.
Ubuntu for Android will be showcased at the World Mobile Congress later this month.
