Apple faces iPad trademark suit in California

By
Apple is facing a legal battle against its iPad trademark in California.

Chinese manufacturer Proview, which is also seeking a sales injunction against the tablet line in China, vowed to take the dispute to Apple's home turf.

A court in Shanghai yesterday agreed to suspend Proview's lawsuit against the Tim Cook-led firm until a more significant dispute between the two companies in Shenzhen has been resolved. The ruling enabled Apple to continue to sell iPads in the Chinese city for the time being.

The Municipal Intermediate People's Court in Shenzhen ruled against Apple in a similar dispute dating back to December last year. The firm will appeal against the decision on February 29.

Proview lays claims to the term "iPad" having registered it in selected territories, including China, in 2000. However, Apple later acquired the global rights to the term, putting the companies on a collision course. The ongoing legal battle has already seen iPads pulled from shelves in some parts of China.

Apple's lawyers are yet to comment on the possibility of a similar dispute in California.
