Nokia is planning to launch a Windows 8-powered tablet before Christmas, sources claim.

Digitimes reports that the Finnish phone maker will build on its pioneering use of the Windows Phone platform with a 10" slate running Microsoft's latest operating system

Nokia will allegedly outsource the production of the device to Taiwan-based firm Compal Electronics, placing initial orders of at least 200,000 units.

Some analysts predict that manufacturers will turn to Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system to gain a foothold in the tablet market, which is dominated by Apple's iPad and slates running Google's Android OS.

Nokia's Windows 8 tablet is expected to be powered by a processor developed by British company Arm. However, this would likely bring limitations as the full version of the operating system requires an Intel chip to run.

Dell previously announced that it is planning to launch a Window 8 tablet following the software's release. Such a device is likely to be powered by Intel technology.

Last year, Nokia executive Paul Amsellem told a French newspaper that the company is readying a Windows 8 tablet for this summer, though his claim was never substantiated.
