Pocket-lint reports that a patent filed during the third quarter of 2011 indicates that the Cupertino firm is experimenting with three-dimensional technology.
Apple has allegedly claimed that its 3D snapper will eclipse its rivals, offering improved colour, along with better facial and gesturing recognition.
"Facial gestures may include, but are not limited to, smiling, grimacing, frowning, winking, and so on and so forth," the report notes.
The tech will take full advantage of the retina display used by the iPhone 4S and the new iPad, but the patent is not limited to iOS devices and computers, which could be an indication that Apple is considering launching a dedicated camera.
Apple is reportedly planning to launch a next generation iPhone this summer. A potential release for the new camera technology remains unconfirmed.
