'Draw Something' passes 50m downloads, beats 'Angry Birds Space'

OMGPOP's Draw Something has reportedly passed the major landmark of 50m mobile downloads, and unseated Angry Birds Space at the top of the paid apps chart on iPhone.

Due to the runaway success of Pictionary-style social game Draw Something, US games giant Zynga now appears to have got a bargain after picking up OMGPOP in an estimated $200m deal.

Venture Beat reports that there have been 50m downloads of Draw Something in the 50 days since its launch, making it the fastest-growing original mobile game in history.

The website says that Draw Something players have made more than six billion drawings across Facebook, Android and Apple iOS. New drawings are now being done at 3,000 per second, it added.

After Angry Birds Space dominated the apps chart last week, Draw Something has reclaimed the top spot in the paid and free chart on the iPhone, an impressive feat against Rovio's hugely popular game.

According to the Official UK App Store Weekly Charts for the week commencing April 1, Draw Something has also beaten Angry Birds Space to the top of the free apps chart on the iPad.

However, the slingshotting birds have held onto the summit of the paid iPad apps rundown, with Draw Something relegated to second place.

New entrants in the paid iPad chart include Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe app at number four, featuring video footage from the celebrity physicist's popular TV shows and a virtual 3D tour of the universe.
