Nokia Lumia 900 to ship in UK on May 14

Nokia has confirmed that the Lumia 900 smartphone will ship in the UK later than expected on May 14, as the company struggles with "overwhelming demand" for the US launch.

Phones4U had promised that the new 4G LTE smartphone, the bigger brother to the Lumia 800, would be available in Britain on April 27.

However, Nokia had never committed to a specific UK launch date, instead announcing that the 4.3-inch display toting handset would arrive in the second quarter of 2012.

A Nokia spokesperson has now told V3: "The overwhelming demand for the Lumia 900 in the US has, unfortunately, had a small knock-on effect on product availability in the UK.

"The Lumia 900 is now expected to be available from Phones4U around May 14."

The Verge reports that Nokia is 'ramping up' production of the Lumia 900, the top end smartphone in its new range running the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system.

However, the technology website claims that all production capacity is "currently committed to the LTE-equipped American model shipping to AT&T customers".

The Lumia 900 supports 4G connectivity for superfast broadband services, but the mobile service is currently not available to UK consumers.

Announced earlier this year, the Lumia 900 also features a single core 1.4GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 4.3-inch AMOLED display, 16GB of internal storage, and an 8MP camera with LED flash and 720p video recording capability.

Demand for the new phone is said to have "exceeded expectations" so far, although Nokia has not yet released any figures on pre-orders or sales.
