Instapaper has been released for Android devices via Google Play.

Mobelux, the firm behind Tumblr's mobile apps, was commissioned to port the popular iOS programme to the platform.

Instapaper was created by Marco Arment in 2008 as a means of saving webpages in a basic text format to read offline at a later date. It is also available as a desktop application and for Amazon Kindle.

The service, which generates revenue through its iOS app, advertising and an optional premium subscription, had more than 2 million users as of late 2011.

Instapaper also runs an affiliated service called The Feature, which compiles its most frequently saved articles in one place for subscribers to access.

The Android edition of Instapaper is available from Google Play for £1.93.
