Intel is reportedly working on a smart TV set-top box that is capable of facial recognition.

Reuters understands that the chip maker is aiming the technology towards the marketing sector, allowing companies to serve tailored adverts to their target demographic.

The hardware will not be capable of identifying individuals, but it will be able to establish age and gender via an affixed camera.

Intel could also promote the tech to network providers, who regularly gather info on their audience. Another potential use is more secure digital rights management for streaming content.

The computing firm previously teamed up with Google to help the search engine giant launch its Google TV platform, though the venture failed to take off.

Intel is allegedly planning to release its set-top box before the end of the year.
