LG pulling out of tablet market to focus on smartphones

LG has announced that it is putting all new tablet development on hold to focus on its smartphone business.

The Korean firm, which launched the Optimus Pad last year, is investing its resources elsewhere after failing to compete with Apple's dominance of the sector.

"We've decided to put all new tablet development on the back burner for the time being in order to focus on smartphones," LG's global communications director Ken Hong told Bloomberg.

The news follows reports that Microsoft is entering the tablet market with the launch of its Surface device. However, LG does not see the slate as a threat to any of its upcoming products.

"LG doesn't see Surface competing with anything we're focusing on at the moment," Hong added.

Apple's iPad devices have a considerable stranglehold on the market. Microsoft will attempt to challenge the Cupertino-based firm's control of the sector with the release of Surface later this year.
