Sky's Opinion On ITV
Published Thursday, Feb 25 1999, 00:00 GMT | By Iain Chapman
At a meeting at the House of Commons which was attended by representatives from ITV and Sky, Sky has claims that ITV is throwing around money by refusing to provide Digital versions of its ITV and ITV2 channels to Sky's SkyDigtial platform.
Sky has claimed that over the next 10 years ITV stood to make £300 Million by joining SkyDigital. This figure even took into account the setup costs.
The Managing Director of Sky's Sky Entertainment division, Ian West said "ITV are throwing money down the drain by not coming on to digital satellite. They are behaving in this economically irrational way simply because the two largest ITV companies, Carlton and Granada, own the pay TV operator on the digital terrestrial platform. Viewers, shareholders and other ITV companies are all being made to pay a very heavy price. ITV should not be allowed to withold its channels in this way. Sky supplied channels to all platforms. ITV, Britain's most popular channel, should do the same. It is irrational and wrong for ITV to behave in this way."
