An Android app from insurance company esure has been launched to prevent motorists from becoming distracted behind the wheel.
The DriveOff application prevents all incoming calls and texts and switches off all other programmes while on the road.
Notifications are disabled when the app detects the user travelling more than 10mph. It uses GPS functionality to determine the speed at which the person is moving.
Statistics from the Transport Research laboratory suggest that 84% of motorists use electronic gadgets to some extent while driving. Texting is often cited as a major cause of road accidents, hindering reaction times by around 23%.
"These findings are a real concern - so many drivers are putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at risk by simply having a ringing, beeping, flashing mobile in the car - even if they don't answer it," said esure's Stuart Vann.
esure's DriveOff is available to download for free through Google Play.
