Samsung unveils Ativ Windows 8 smartphone, tablet

By
Samsung Electronics has unveiled its brand-new Ativ range of devices running Microsoft's Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, including a smartphone, tablets and new smart PCs.

Announced yesterday at IFA 2012 in Berlin, the Samsung Ativ Tab is a new Windows RT Tablet featuring a 10.1-inch display and measuring 8.9mm thick.

Competing with Microsoft's own Surface line of slates, the Ativ Tab will deliver the full Windows 8 touch PC experience, including Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT preview integrated.

The new tablet has a 8,200 mAh battery and is compatible with a range of accessories including printers, keyboards, projectors, external monitors, and other peripherals via its USB port and uHDMI.

Samsung - which recently lost a bruising patent fight with Apple - has also announced the Ativ S, a new smartphone running Windows Phone 8, the upgrade to Microsoft's mobile operating system that will bring various improvements when it launches this autumn.

The Ativ S features a similar 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display as seen in the multimilion selling Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, although it only has a dual-core 1.5Ghz processor.

Alongside Windows Phone features, the phone and tablet devices also have Samsung's own unique services and content, such as the ChatOn messaging service integrated in Microsoft's own People Hub.

With the introduction of Microsoft's touch-enabled Windows 8 this October, Samsung has given its new range the name Ativ, which is 'Vita' backwards, taken from the Latin word for "life". Samsung said this is about its pledge to "make everyone's life easier".

The 11.6-inch Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Ativ Smart PC Pro are Samsung's next set of smart devices. Running Windows 8 but backwards compatible to Windows 7, the devices feature a detachable keyboard-docking system that allows the product to shift from clamshell notebook to tablet PC.

An enhanced 10-finger multi-touch screen supports all the usual gestures, such as pinch-to-zoom, while the devices are also compatible with Samsung's S Pen stylus seen in the Galaxy Note range. This means that users can draw and write directly on the screen.

The Ativ Smart PC Pro runs a powerful Intel Core i5 processor, while the Ativ Smart PC has a next-generation Intel Atom processor. The Smart PC has USB 2.0, while the PC Pro has two USB 3.0. The latter device is claimed to offer 13.5 hours of battery life, while the former offers up to 8 hours.

"Samsung is delighted to introduce a wide portfolio of Windows 8 powered devices and our new Ativ range," said Samsung UK and Ireland vice president of corporate sales Graham Long.

"With our leadership in design and technology and Microsoft's leadership in operating systems, together we are able to provide customers with a full range of Ativ devices for cross-category convergence."

Microsoft corporate vice president of OEM Nick Parker added: "Samsung is a highly valued partner and it's great to see this investment in a global brand for its Windows-based Smart PCs, tablets, and phones.

"This gives us an increased opportunity to inspire our customers with excitement and confidence as they enjoy Windows experiences across their beautiful Samsung devices, including entertainment scenarios, mobile productivity and cloud services."

Pricing and exact availability for the Ativ range has not yet been announced by Samsung, but it is likely that the devices will launch worldwide this autumn alongside Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
