Landline phones will be obsolete in the workplace within five years, new research has suggested.

Virgin Media Business conducted a survey of chief information officers, a majority of whom said that mobile phones will phase out their desk-based counterparts in the near future.

Of those quizzed, 65% tipped the landline to become the next piece of office furniture to be phased out, with 62% predicting that the desktop PC will eventually follow suit.

Smartphones were ranked as the least likely device to fall out of favour, but 24% of respondents were not convinced that tablet PCs have a long-term future in the office.

"The pace of change with technology is having a transformative effect on the way we work. A decade ago it would have been unthinkable to suggest an office without telephones," said Virgin Media Business COO Tony Grace.

"Now it's hard to imagine being separated from our smartphones."

Earlier this year, research conducted by Ofcom suggested that Britons spend more time texting on mobiles than holding telephone conversations.
