Virgin Media to launch TV Anywhere streaming service

By
Virgin Media has today (September 7) unveiled Virgin TV Anywhere, a new Sky Go-style service that will enable cable TV customers to stream live channels and on-demand on smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Launching "soon" as an app and website, TV Anywhere will offer around 30 channels for live streaming spanning a "wide range of genres", along with around 2,000 hours of video on-demand content.

Exact details on the available channels has not yet been announced by Virgin Media, nor has the make-up of the on-demand programming.

Users will be able to browse programme listings, get recommendations on shows, movies and other content, and also get the latest entertainment news on TV Anywhere.

There are also options for managing planned recordings on the V+ box using the app and site, as well as sharing content on Twitter and Facebook.

Video will be streamed using 'adaptive' technology, which tailors the quality of the stream to the strength of broadband connection on the device that the customer is using. The better the connection, the better the stream.

TV Anywhere will be available for all Virgin Media TV customers to access, either via the website or the Virgin TV Anywhere mobile app.

The app and site will also offer additional options for customers with the TiVo set top box service, including full management of the My Shows section, such as setting up and deleting recordings, and the TiVo's 'thumps' rating system.

TiVo customers will be able to use the Virgin TV Anywhere app to turn their smartphone or tablet into a remote control, unlocking gesture-based control for actions such as pause and rewind, along with changing channels or entering on-demand.

The app will be available to download for free from the iTunes App store for Apple devices (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch), although an exact date for the launch has not yet been announced.

It has been confirmed, though, that the Virgin TV Anywhere app will arrive on Android devices in 2013.

TV Anywhere is similar to Sky Go, the multi-platform service launched by Sky last year that enables satellite subscribers to stream live and on-demand TV on smartphones, laptops and tablets.
